Sing United Supports: The People’s Kitchen
As we look forward to our next challenge musically, we can’t wait to introduce the next instalment in our Sing United Supports journey. So, we’re continuing with our mission to support a charity closely related to the theme of our next show. The message behind the music in ‘Power To The People’ being strongly connected to change for the better. That change being brought about by individuals, small groups and sometimes armies of people.
For the Power To The People project, we proudly support the amazing work of The People’s Kitchen in Newcastle. Big thanks to one of our singers, Rose Goldie, who put us in touch with them and made the suggestion for Sing United to become involved.
Over Three Decades of Support
The People’s Kitchen have been helping the people of Newcastle who need it most for more than 30 years now. The heart and determination of one woman, Alison Kay, who set up an organisation to support vulnerable people in need. She read a story about the death of a homeless man. As a result in 1985 she set about providing food, clothing and warmth from a shelter nestled next to the railway arches by Dean Street in Newcastle. Alison rallied 40 helpers within the first year to support homeless and disadvantaged people in the Newcastle area.
Today the recently refurbished Alison Centre, a dedicated clothing and new off-site food warehouse are the result of one woman’s passion to make a difference. This is coupled with the willingness of selfless volunteers and sponsors who were recruited by Alison. They give up their time and money to support this wonderful cause and service in our community. Over 40,000 meals are provided every year now from such humble beginnings. Sadly, Alison died in 2001 but her legacy to provide friendship, food and a future well and truly lives on through The People’s Kitchen.
The People’s Kitchen £50,000 Appeal!
The People’s Kitchen have just launched an appeal reaching out to the generous people of our wonderful city to help. They need to replace their catering van that has seen better days! The van goes out with a team of people serving hot meals to those who can’t always get in to The People Kitchen. Serving over 200 meals every week and carrying clothes, and also sleeping bags, for people who need a little extra helping hand. They need £50,000 for a new fully kitted out van and we’re going to do our bit to help them on their way.
Doing Our Bit…
Sing United will be finding many different ways to support and connect with the work The People’s Kitchen do. Through our community spirit, friendship and music we will raise funds and awareness of the charity. Finally culminating in our ‘Power To The People’ concert on Sunday November 18th, 6pm at The People’s Theatre in Newcastle. We’d love you to support us and them by digging deep and donating to this fantastic cause.
