Our River Stories: Maureen McPhee & Maggie Stamp
It’s a family affair… time for sisters Maureen and Maggie to tell us about their Dad…
“Our River Stories: This is the Welders Apprenticeship paper signed by our Dad and his Dad when he entered Swan Hunter’s shipyard at the age of 16.”
“He finished his apprenticeship at 21 and worked in the yards for many years before leaving, taking his family with him to work abroad in the Middle East, laying pipelines in Tripoli.
He came back to Wallsend and Swan Hunters in the 1950s and saw his last working day there, before having the heart attack that would kill him, aged 58, on Swan Hunter’s famous bank.
He was one of the classic Black Trade of his days, hard working, hard drinking and a big smoker.”
