The People’s Theatre and Sing United for One Night Only!

Sing United at The People’s Theatre

Now we’ve introduced the charity we’re supporting this term in the last blog, attention turns to our venue! We’re thrilled to focus on the much coveted ‘venue-venue’ that is The People’s Theatre! This was carefully chosen to blend beautifully with our ‘Power To The People’ musical theme. Not forgetting the obvious link with our chosen charity, The People’s Kitchen. As with everything Sing United do, it’s all about the people!

The People’s Theatre is a leading amateur theatre company in the North of England. It was originally located in the centre of Newcastle and moved to its current site in Heaton in 1962. The theatre has long a history dating back to the early 1900s. It is also one of the largest and oldest theatres of its kind in the country. Dramatic productions first started in 1911, after the theatre was co-founded by Colin Veitch who captained Newcastle United in their Edwardian heyday. Ah-ha! Another connection with the founder of Sing United and his beloved Toon Army!

The 500-seat theatre stages up to fourteen productions each year including a full-scale pantomime. Each show is put together by the theatre’s members. They work to a high standard and some have progressed to work in professional theatre. The list of former members include Kevin Whately of ‘Auf Wiedersehen, Pet’ fame. In addition to that, Pet Shop Boys singer-songwriter Neil Tennant and comedian Ross Noble.

The missions of Sing United and The People’s Theatre compliment each other as they both centre around their people. Operating as a genuine community theatre, The People’s Theatre offers everyone the chance to join in one of their productions.
