Sing United Foundation working with Recyke y’bike

Up until this term, Sing United have proudly worked with numerous charities in the North East under the banner of Sing United Supports. A recent development in the Sing United story has been the exciting news that we are now a registered charity working as the Sing United Foundation. We’re hoping this will be a springboard to raising the profile of the work we do in giving back to the North East community.

Throughout our ‘Emergency Planet Earth’ show we will be highlighting the issues our planet is facing and will bring our communities together to see what difference we can make. To go alongside this, Sing United are proud to be working in partnership with a fantastic North East charity called Recyke y’Bike.

The Green Heart Army never cease to amaze!

Just when you think we must have exhausted all the talents of our wonderful singers, another batch come out of the woodwork! The time, energy and enthusiasm our singers put in to fundraising is nothing short of staggering. We’re off to a flying start this term – we’ve had beautifully knitted owls and green hearts, to Sing United blankets and a photoshoot to raffle… there will be plenty more where that came from I’m sure! Here we have just a few of our amazing crafters so far…

So what is Recyke y’bike?

Established in 2006, the North East based charity sells bikes they refurbish and accessories too. The money they collect helps to provide jobs, volunteering opportunities, training and free bikes for people on low incomes who are referred to them. One of their key objectives is to provide a low-cost and environmentally friendly transport solution for thousands of people in the North East.

They take in over 2000 used bike donations from members of the public every year. The bikes are then refurbished, by their amazing team of qualified staff and volunteers, to be sold or given away to help others in need. They have shops in Byker and Durham offering servicing and repairs as well as online shops on eBay and Facebook.

The work they do…

Recyke y’bike work with their partner, Key Enterprises, to send bikes to schools in The Gambia. The bikes they send help children living in remote areas to access education they would otherwise miss out on. They also send bikes to a County Durham prison where they work with young offenders to help them gain vital engineering skills alongside confidence and self-belief. They also give bikes to children and adults referred to them by other organisations.

Head over to their website to take a look at what our support means to them.

How can we help?

In addition to the money we’re raising this term, we can donate any used bike, no matter what condition it is in! Due to limited resources the charity struggle to collect donations but if you do have any bikes to donate they would welcome them to be dropped off to one of their their central locations in Byker, Durham, Hexham and Berwick. They will take donations of children’s bikes and also scooters that they refurbish and add to the free section of the shops that attract customers into their premises.

What a wonderful charity and cause! They are recognised in the North East for their environmental focus as featured in the local press. We’re so thrilled to be playing our part in fundraising for Recyke y’bike and helping them to continue to make a HUGE difference.

The work they do with individuals is life changing and the wider benefits for the environment and sustainability are truly inspiring.
