The Green Heart Army Marches Through the Summer!
Never a dull moment in the Sing United Crew! Always thinking of new ways to help in our communities, even when we’re on our Summer break! Spearheaded by 3 members of the Straker family who all sing with us, we embarked on a new initiative to collect green milk carton tops between our last rehearsal for ‘Always On My Mind‘ and our first rehearsal for ‘Lest We Forget‘!
Newbiggin Maritime Centre are collecting the bottle tops on behalf of the Newbiggin WI. They will recycle them and donate the money made to the Great North Children’s Hospital at the RVI in Newcastle. It is specifically a collection of green plastic milk bottle tops. They are the most valuable when recycled, with green top being the most commonly used type of milk.
The Great North Children’s Hospital at the RVI in Newcastle is one of the largest children’s hospitals in the UK. They care for poorly and injured children from Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and Northumberland. The hospital also provides highly specialised care for all children in the North East and North Cumbria with severe or long-term illnesses. It is also an internationally leading research centre working to constantly improve treatments for all childhood diseases.
So what can a group of 150 singers achieve in 12 weeks???
Taking into account the holiday season, we thought the Green Heart Army would be able to muster a fair amount of bottle tops. We’re also aware that not everybody buys semi-skimmed milk so we were pretty realistic with our expectations.
Well, it didn’t take long for the word to spread with the Green Heart Army shouting it from the roof tops! Through the wonderful power of social media, personal and work networks, the response has been overwhelming! Singers have friends and family on the case collecting like fury. Many workplaces, hospitals, gyms, supermarkets and local communities have been getting behind our collection. A local County Durham school heard about what we were doing and pledged to donate 4,000 bottle tops and the summer had barely started! The true power of community and our Green Heart Army has been unleashed!
Remember to bring your collections of green milk bottle tops to our first rehearsal on Thursday 5th September. From the huge buzz of activity of the Green Heart Army, Lawrence may need a lorry to transport them all! Here’s hoping ?
A million thank yous once again to each and every one of you ?
