Our Remembrance Stories: Dave Henderson

We can’t believe we’ve reached the end of this term’s ‘Meet the Singers’ series. Here we have part 8 and, fittingly, we’re back to where we started with a second story from Dave Henderson. Dave has kindly shared another connection he has with the songs in our show, ‘Lest We Forget’. We can’t wait believe it’s tomorrow at the Whitley Bay Playhouse!

“This second story comes from World War II about my dad and his siblings. My dad was one of five brothers and one sister. The younger sister worked in Ammunitions which was a very important part of the war effort. The brothers all signed up to the forces. One went in the Army, three in the Navy and my dad in the RAF. He was a test pilot for the Spitfires.

All five of them went to war – one ended up in a Japanese Prisoner of War camp and one was fighting in Gallipoli, but I’m not sure about the other brothers. My dad was in the Far East and he ended up in Alexandria. The war department contacted each of the armed forces and they managed to all meet up in Egypt.

They didn’t tell us any special stories as no one would speak about the war afterwards. My dad threw his medals in the back of the wardrobe and I know the brother who was the Prisoner of War was tortured and would not speak.

Thankfully, they all came home and reunited with their sister and the rest of the family.”

Thank you so much Dave for sharing your family stories and connections with us.
